Olha Zawerucha Swyntuch Back to top
Olha Zawerucha Swyntuch Over a twenty year period, Mrs. Olha Zawerucha Swyntuch has been an inspiration and exemplary leader in the global credit union community. In 1980, Olha joined Buduchnist Credit Union where she flourished as General Manager until 1986. She then went on to neighbouring So-Use Credit Union where she would spend the next seven years as General Manager of a fast growing credit union— but Olha’s global credit union experiences were just beginning.

On May 5, 1993, Olha Zawerucha Swyntuch was assigned by the Ukraine Credit Union Development Assistance Project (UCUDAP) Phase 1, to head the mission as Field Office Manager in Kyiv, Ukraine. With the financial support of $1.2 million from the Canadian Government through CIDA, the Council and Mrs. Olha went to work.

For the following three years, Olha Zawerucha Swyntuch lived and breathed credit union development in Ukraine, And although Ukraine was technically an independent country, a strong distrust of imposed authority from Moscow created additional difficulty in the organization of credit unions in Ukraine. Not to mention the variety of factors such as rampant inflation and declining standard of living, this in turn added to the complexity of the state of affairs.

By 1994, there were 60 credit unions in the Ukraine and Olha’s work was instrumental in these accomplishments including internships, meeting with 400 people regarding the establishment of credit unions, seminars in 7 regions with 80 students, and numerous meetings with government bodies regarding credit union legislation.

Olha has returned to live and work in Canada, and since 2001, her role as President of the Council of Ukrainian Credit Unions of Canada helps her in fostering a voice for all Ukrainian Canadian credit unions providing a nucleus for new ideas and marketing strategies that propel the Council to a respected body of the community.

Her constant ability to motivate and be the driving force and energy that propels the Ukraine Credit Union strengthening program and her endless volunteer contributions not only serves as an inspiration but a truly interesting and enriching personal and credit union journey. Olha Zawerucha Swyntuch has demonstrated that a successful credit union leader is also a spirited and committed community leader and it is this commitment to the community that has become the credo of her leadership in the credit union movement.
