The Agricultural Co-operative Development Initiative (Ag-CDI) was a short-term program that operated in two phases between October 2006 and March 2009 - with a mandate to promote sustainable livelihoods for Canadian farmers by assisting the development of biofuel and value-added agricultural co-operatives. The program was financially supported by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and co-managed by the Canadian Co-operative Association and le Conseil Canadien de la Coopération et de la Mutualité, in partnership with the Co-operatives Secretariat.
During its lifespan, Ag-CDI provided nearly $2 million in technical assistance support to 63 agricultural co-operatives across Canada - 27 co-ops involved in biofuels and bio-energy, and 36 co-ops exploring other value-added opportunities. With these funds, the co-ops were able to complete feasibility studies and business plans, member recruitment drives and share offerings, board and member training, and learning exchanges that allowed them to meet with and learn from more established co-ops. Ag-CDI also held two successful conferences, created development guides, videos and other learning tools, and completed research on several important themes for agricultural co-operatives. Although the Ag-CDI program will not continue as is, the agricultural co-op development priority will continue as part of the renewed Co-operative Development Initiative (CDI). For more information on CDI, visit this link:
