When the Soviet Bloc crumbled, a determined group of Ukrainian-Canadians set out to bring the benefits of credit unions back to Ukraine. The Council of Ukrainian Credit Unions in Canada enlisted CCA in the effort and for the past 15 years this partnership has been building a successful credit union system in Ukraine. Today, some 700 credit unions with a combined portfolio of $444 million are generating economic activity throughout the country.
"Through our partnershop we have built a grass-roots credit union movement that has flourished with the assistance of Canadians," says Council chairperson Olha Zawerucha-Swyntuch.
The partnership is now improving services to some 1.5 million credit union members, helping credit unions to improve access to productive and agricultural credit, protect members' deposits, and strengthen the national federation. |
