2012 UN International Year of Co-operatives

“ Co-operatives are a reminder to the international community that it is possible to pursue both economic viability and social responsibility.”

 Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General

On December 18, 2009, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution declaring 2012 the UN International Year of Co-operatives.  The resolution, entitled “Co-operatives in Social Development”, recognizes the diversity of the co-operative movement around the world and urges governments to take measures aimed at creating a supportive environment for the development of co-operatives.

The resolution was supported by the Government of Canada.  On December 3, 2009 the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, who is responsible for co-operatives in his capacity as Minister of State (Agriculture), held a news conference in Ottawa announcing the federal government's support for the International Year.

The International Year will give both the co-operative sector and governments an opportunity to:

  • Raise public awareness of co-operatives and the economic and social contribution of the co-operative business model.
  • Support the growth and sustainability of co-operatives; and
  • Create legacy initiatives that will live beyond December 31, 2012.

This is an incredible opportunity for co-operatives everywhere.  We are on the road to 2012, and momentum, potential and possibilities are increasing every day!

The official Canadian 2012 website is under construction with its launch planned for January 2011. In the meantime,  this webpage includes frequently asked questions, English and French versions of the UN resolution, links to related sites and updates from all levels as they become available.  Explore the links and check back regularly for more information.
