Indonesia in the Aftermath

In Aceh, the Canadian Co-operative Association is working with PASKA and the World Bank to equip small entrepreneurs with the tools they need to secure a stronger position in the marketplace - and out of poverty. For all its deadly destruction the 2004 tsunami did bring peace to Aceh, opening it to the world's view and markets. The focus in Aceh is to help residents in the coastal regions of Pidie and Nagan Raya rebuild their economic and social worlds, and enjoy a lasting, satisfying peace for generations to come.

For Marlina, it's a dream come true. Her two daughters are attending university. For years Marlina struggled on her own to provide for her family, pounding melinjo nuts into emping chips, a local snack. In 2008, the opportunity arose to join a co-operative of emping producers and she hasn't looked back. Today, she is the president of a new marketing co-operative that is changing the way she and other small entrepreneurs are doing business.

Khalidine Alba didn't choose a life of service, it chose him. Fairness and the desire to put his own needs second prompted villagers to make this young fisher their "panglimalaut" leader when he was just 35.

The way forward is not always obvious in places like Kuala Tadu on Aceh's west coast. When government troops and Gam rebels each vied to control this coastal hot spot Khalidine chose not to take sides... winning respect from both along the way. More
