Project ECONOMIC GROWTH AND FOOD SECURITY IN COLOMBIA
Country/Region Colombia
Development Partner GESTANDO
Sector Micro, small and medium enterprise
Project Description While the economy of Colombia has shown growth in recent years, rural areas, including the four departments where this project takes place, still face significant poverty. The average family income in the area is just $26 per month. Located in the central region, the area is still affected by violence, human rights abuses and a lack of technical knowledge to produce crops suitable for market. CCA and GESTANDO (Incubadora Empresarial Colombia Solidaria) are providing technical support to farmers to strengthen local agricultural co-operatives and to help farmers produce a variety of products including cocoa, palm oil, beef and pork as an alternative to the illegal production of the plant from which cocaine is made.
Project ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION IN HUANCAHAUSI
Country/Region Peru
Development Partner ATAHUALPA
Sector Agriculture
Project Description Canola is a relatively new crop in Peru, where only experimental planting has occurred. The Canadian Cooperative Association, in collaboration with the Lima Regional Government, has embarked on a four-year project to support the sustainable production of canola in the Peruvian Andes by indigenous populations, specifically the communities of Huancahuasi and Picoy. CCA is also helping the co-operative to improve its tourism business, which centres on local hot springs and may expand to include guiding for adventure tourists.
Project SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT DIVERSIFICATION
Country/Region Peru
Development Partner NORANDINO
Sector Micro, small and medium enterprise
Project Description Norandino, CCA's partner in this project, has already achieved considerable success in developing fair trade coffee and sugar, which has begun to improve livelihoods in a very poor region of Peru. The Canadian worker co-operative, La Siembra, is among their main international business partners. The objective of this three-year project is to improve infrastructure, machinery and equipment to allow Norandino to expand its business in other products, including tropic marmalades and banana chips.
