WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
A1 Sustaining the sector: best practices in employee engagement
How do co-ops and credit unions attract and retain top-quality employees who contribute to their long-term sustainability? How are co-operative values and principles instilled in employees coming from outside the co-op sector? How can an organizational culture committed to sustainability increase employee engagement? Session speakers will explore these questions within the framework of building organizational sustainability.
A2 Sustainable approaches to community development
Throughout their history, co-ops and credit unions have played a significant role in meeting the needs of traditionally under-served communities, and that is equally true today. Presenters will explore ways of creating equitable partnerships, breaking down stereotypes, attracting new members and developing new markets.
A3 Sustainable consumption: can co-ops influence consumer choices?
This session will explore the role and opportunities for the co-operative sector to influence consumer behaviour in making sustainable choices. Learn about how consumer co-ops in Japan and Italy have been at the forefront of sustainable consumption trends. Explore the role of credit unions in promoting responsible debt management in a society geared towards over-consumption.
B1 Financing for sustainability
The age-old co-operative challenge is financing and access to capital. Join speakers in examining financing innovations for organizational sustainability, from identifying the profit opportunities in social financing to using tax credits and new tools for investment in co-ops. Learn how one multi-stakeholder co-operative dealt successfully with questions of financing, ownership and governance.
B2 Shift happens: new forms of co-operation
Co-operatives are becoming increasingly involved in complementary movements and partnering with like-minded organizations as they seek ways to increase profitability, serve their members and achieve social objectives. Presenters will challenge the audience to explore the positive and negative implications of such coalition-building on economic and environmental sustainability.
B3 Green economy, the co-op way
Greening the economy isn't just about reducing greenhouse gas emissions, using less natural resources and creating less waste. It's also about reconfiguring businesses and infrastructure to deliver better returns on natural, human and economic capital investments. Join presenters in discussing and strategizing on how co-ops and the co-op model are central to the vision of a green economy.
C1 Leading the way: governance for co-operative sustainability
Featuring the 2010 winners of the Leadership in Co-operative Governance Award and Brown Governance Co-operative Award for Boardroom Culture, this session will explore the role of boards in charting the course for organizational sustainability. Learn about best practices and innovations in governance that allow enterprises to excel in fulfilling the co-operative principles and providing services to members.
C2 Sustainable Cities - Sustainable Future
Co-ops are part of a matrix of players in different sectors who contribute to building cities that address social, economic and environmental sustainability. Drawing on the example of Vancouver, panellists will focus on the strategies and conditions needed to build a sustainable community-based economy.
C3 Co-operative action for environmental sustainability
Learn about actions co-operative organizations are taking in fighting climate change. Join presenters in exploring the relationship between the co-op principles and environmental sustainability, and strategize on the potential for the co-operative sector to be a leader in this issue.
