Savings for a bright future

The heat is already starting to build as Monica Dzonu begins her daily rounds. Dressed in a brilliant blue uniform of Ghana's distinctive credit union cloth, she walks briskly beside a busy two-lane highway on the outskirts of Takoradi in Ghana's western region. She stops in at the small businesses that dot the side of the road. Most are housed in rudimentary buildings or old shipping containers. more

The introduction of green houses in Cuatro Pinos co-op in Guatemala were an innovation enabling women of all ages to earn income through farming where traditions limited their work in the fields. Training for youth also helped to bring a gender balance between co-op members. Young people (18-26) participated in the project beyond expectations − ballooning training enrollment from 20 to 150 young people of near gender balance. These two innovations have altered the gender relations in the co-op with women and young trainees learning and bringing new ideas and attitudes towards technology and gender relations to the older coop members.
