After the tsunami a new invasive plant species − water hyacinth − began to suffocate rivers and ponds in Aceh, Indonesia causing a gradual decrease of fish populations that local villagers relied upon for their livelihoods. CCA's partner, PASKA, recognized an opportunity that would both benefit the environment and create market opportunities for women and ex-combatants. They worked with fish farmers to harvest the water hyacinth from the fresh water, then dry and sell it to local weavers who converted the pest into handbags and furniture.
