Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada

Our Mission

Our international mission is to facilitate the development and growth of co-operatives in developing countries that return social and economic value to their members and communities.

Since 1985, CCA has channeled Canadian human, financial and technical resources to assist co-operatives in developing nations. Here at home, CCA advocates for global justice and equity by engaging elected officials and educating Canadians about intertnational development.

Canadian co-operatives have been involved in international development since just after the Second World War. The Co-operative Union of Canada, CCA's predecessor, operated the Canadian version of the CARE program, which provided relief supplies to Europe. As new nations gained their independence in Africa and Asia in the 1950s, co-operatives were often seen as a home-grown way to replace the departing colonial economic interests. More
