| Where to get practical help for co-op development |
|

In Canada, there is a network of co-op associations that help new co-ops get started, and build linkages between co-ops so they can learn from and help each other. These associations also provide a common voice for the co-op sector within their various jurisdictions, and work to ensure that proper legislation, policy and programs are in place for co-operatives. They are non-profit associations, supported by membership dues and contracts, so there is always a limit to available resources.
New co-ops are strongly advised to connect with their appropriate provincial association and any relevant sector federation - for development assistance and for the benefits of networking with other co-ops. The provincial associations represent and serve all types of co-operatives, while sector federations serve co-ops that share a similar organizational structure, such as worker co-operatives, or co-ops involved in the same activity, such as housing or health care.
The links below lead to Co-op Advisory Services that offer practical help to co-ops for start-up and development.

National Co-op Advisory Services See this link for organizations and programs that serve all provinces and territories. The list includes federations that support a specific sector or type of co-op - such as housing, health or worker co-operatives. It also includes a program of the Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA) and the Conseil canadien de la coopération et de la mutualité (CCCM), the Co-op Development InfoService

CoopZone Developers Network The members of this network are available to assist co-ops across Canada with start-up and development projects. Most co-op developers are private consultants that charge fees. Some specialize in different types of co-ops or different aspects of development, so new co-ops are advised to ensure that there is a proper fit. CLICK HERE to see a list of network members by province and look for those listed as "Developer"(not "Allied members"). Since the list does not include all co-op developers in Canada, you could ask your provincial co-op association or other co-ops in your area for more options.
