In March 1909, the Co-operative Union of Canada held its inaugural meeting in Hamilton Ontario. The organization was initially engaged in government relations and public policy, co-operative development and communications. In 1987, the CUC merged with the Co-operative College of Canada to form the Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA).
EXPERIENCE THE CO-OP STORY
Over the course of our 100-year history the, foundations of the Canadian co-operative movement have remained intact. Co-operatives have survived through the Great Depression, World Wars, changes in government and the demographics of Canada and throughout our history they have demonstrated their commitment to innovation, entrepreneurship, economic growth and their social vision: to improve the lives of citizens and the communities they live in.
FROM EARLY DAYS TO THE PRESENT TIME
To capture and share the depth and diversity of co-operation and the legacy of co-operatives across Canada, CCA is creating a limited edition commemorative book. This book will include a collection of images from across Canada, illustrating our history from the early days to the present time. Woven throughout the images will be the story of A Century of Co-operation. Authoring this book is Ian MacPherson, Canada's preeminent co-operative historian.
The book has been divided into three main sections: Themes from the Beginning, Building the Movement and Innovations and Wider Directions, with chapters on a wide range of issues, including the importance of co-operatives to rural life, co-operative security, financial, housing and consumer co-ops, and the CUC/CCA's role in international development
